This is one of my big gripes about working with the kids. We work hard to collect clothes and supplies and cash to take into Ukraine and Russia. We do this because we have a heart for -- their children. We do this because we have seen the Father's heart for His children. There are some in these countries who have also seen the Father's Heart. We have some wonderful brothers and sisters who also see the poor children who suffer. These children are forgotten by the rest; labeled as "bums" by others.
What frustrates me is when we send stuff over and worry that customs or some local thief in government will steal what belongs to the kids. To date we have only had a couple of things stolen. We have had "quasi-officials" rummage and rant that they should confiscate our "contraband". Their real intent is to figure a way to make it look like a crime has been committed so they can sell kid's stuff on the black market.
Ukraine is actually better than Russia in this aspect, not because they are trying hard to build good relations with their new European union but because their new president is coming down hard on those who take bribes or are involved in illegalities. Every time we come into the country we get nervous, not because we are guilty but worried about evil confiscators. We shouldn't have to worry. We are there to help.
I am so frustrated with this roadblock that I have talked about getting a meeting with President Yuschenko. If we are trying to help his helpless than help us! Give us a free pass. Make us honored diplomats that people recognize. When we pull out our ID badge let the dark ones cringe back and flag us forward. No, I do not want privileges status because we are "Americans". That has nothing to do with it. I want privileged passes because we have chosen to stand in the gap for those others refuse to help; those who are forgotten and forsaken by their own people.
We gladly come to help. We love the Russian and Ukrainian people. We know the problems and there is no need to pretend there are none. Spare us the pretty presentations of kid's jails which seem to be empty. And in the meantime we continue wading through it all until we reach the arms of the children.
